Chapter 5
By: Ella Richards
In chapter five of, Are You Fully Charged, Tom Rath wants the readers to focus on asking the world what it needs and how to create meaning when you are changing the world. There are three categories in which people have in their life. Interests, Needs, and Strengths. Reflecting on my life, I realize that I put my interests before the needs of others and the world. I am still growing up, so I never really thought about putting the needs of others before myself. That was until I took a class in my senior year of high school called, Multicultural Studies. That class informed me about how other cultures were living around the world and just how privileged I am. I can now say, that I look at things in a different light now, and am more knowledgable about different cultures and issues that they face.
This chapter specifically talks about how people need to focus on the natural talent that they possess to change the world. Rath says, "The more time you spend building on who you already are, the faster you will grow" (Rath). I think that he is saying that if you keep spending time building yourself to be a better person, the faster you will reach that goal. For example, I grew up playing on a very competitive travel softball team. I spent every weekend in the winter, and pretty much my whole summer out of state at tournaments. My whole world revolved around softball, and once I came to the realization that I did not want to pursue my softball career in college I had no idea what to do. Luckily I had a great support system that helped me figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life! I spent my whole childhood playing a sport and once I realized that I wanted to do something else with my life, I worked hard and accomplished my goal. I thought that softball was my natural talent, but as I age I see that I have a passion for working with children. I am building myself up to be the best I possibly can to help future generations!
