Chapter 3
By: Ella Richards
In chapter three of, Are you Fully Charged, by Tom Rath it talks about making your workplace a purpose instead of just work. He says, "The work you do each day is how you make a difference in the world"(Rath). I agree with this statement because even the most minor jobs play a big role in making the world different. When you find the right work, you can find and create meaning all the time. For example, in the reading Rath talks about the hospital cleaning staff. Some workers are there just to clean, while others create relationships and find meaning in their work. In an environment like a hospital, it is necessary to make relationships. Relationships can help people achieve their goals and make them a better person. This is because of the way people treat you.
In my own personal experience, I have had difficulty creating relationships with my co-workers. That has caused me to not enjoy my job as much. Creating relationships means creating meaning. Like I have said in my previous posts, meaning is good for the mind and body. Surrounding yourself with happy people reflects on yourself. I think that in order to become more involved in my work and create some purpose, means that I need to be more open to creating relationships.
After college, I want to be an elementary school teacher. I will be able to create meaning with this job. As a teacher, I will be able to change the lives of little humans! Rath says, "Work is about making your life, and the lives of other people, as a product of your efforts"(Rath). This statement is so true because as a teacher I want to be able to give children the meaning that they need in life to succeed.
Chapter three of this book has informed me of how to be able to create meaning in my place of employment and how the work I do will change the world!
